What is Truvada?
Truvada is a first-of-its-kind pill that can help reduce the risk of acquiring HIV-1 through sex when taken daily and combined with safe sex practices. Here are a few key facts about Truvada:
- You must be HIV-negative and weigh at least 177 pounds to take Truvada.
- Truvada does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) nor does it prevent pregnancy.
- You should continue testing for HIV at least once every three months while taking Truvada.
- It’s important to use latex or polyurethane condoms and know the HIV status of your partners to further reduce your risk. If you think you may have been exposed to HIV, tell us right away.
The most common side effects of Truvada include weight loss, headache, and stomach pain. Less commonly, serious side effects like kidney problems, lactic acidosis, and worsening of hepatitis B may occur.
We encourage you to visit Affinity Urgent Care in La Marque, Alvin, or Galveston, to learn if Truvada is right for you. Our urgent care centers have extended hours every day and do not require appointments, although you can check-in online to streamline your visit with us.
