What Are Physicals for Athletes?

Sports physicals, also referred to as “preparticipation physical evaluations” or “PPEs,” are examinations to determine if your child is healthy enough to participate in sports. These physicals are also designed to identify potential health issues that may pose a risk to their safety when playing sports.

A medical provider will do the following during a youth athletic physical exam:

  • Discuss their personal and family medical histories, previous illnesses, surgeries, allergies, and medications
  • Measure their height, weight, heart rate, and blood pressure
  • Test their vision and hearing
  • Check for age-appropriate growth and development
  • Perform a physical examination and pay attention to their heart, lungs, joints, muscles, bones, and overall flexibility
  • Recommend how to improve their athletic performance
  • Explain ways to reduce their risk of injury

The practitioner will take the time to answer any questions you or your child might have regarding the exam. If your child is deemed healthy enough to participate in their chosen sport, you will complete specific paperwork at the end of your visit and receive documentation to provide to their sports team.

High School Sports Physicals & College Sports Physicals

For teenagers and young adults, sports physicals involve a similar examination process, addressing any health changes since the prior exam.

How To Prepare for a Sports Physical

It’s important to ensure your child’s sports physical is completed in time for the athletic season. Additionally, starting the process early allows for extra time if your medical professional finds any health conditions that need to be treated before clearing your child to play. To streamline the process, make sure you:

  • Schedule sports physicals well before the sports season to allow time for any necessary follow-ups or treatments.
  • Complete and submit all required paperwork to your child’s sports team or school.
  • If your child needs further evaluation, follow up with your primary care physician or specialist.
