What Is a DOT Physical Exam, Exactly?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires DOT examinations for individuals who:

  • Are paid to operate a vehicle that’s built to carry more than eight people
  • Drive any vehicle that’s built to carry more than 15 people
  • Operate a vehicle on an interstate that weighs more than 10,000 pounds
  • Operate a vehicle carrying a hazardous material that requires a special placard

As is the case with most other physicals, a DOT physical exam begins with a review of the patient’s medical history, followed by an assessment of important health characteristics like:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Blood pressure
  • Heartbeat
  • Lung function
  • Weight
  • Reflexes
  • Gait and posture

A urinalysis is also completed to check urine for abnormal levels of proteins, sugar, and other irregularities that could point to potential medical problems. In the event that a patient’s physical indicates the need for further examination, tests such as digital X-ray imaging or bloodwork may be performed.
