How to Prepare for Your First STI Test

How To Prepare for Your First STI Test

As a sexually active person, you should receive regular STI testing to ensure you’re staying safe and healthy—even if you don’t have symptoms. While it’s natural to be nervous about your first STI test, remember that it’s simply an integral part of maintaining your overall health (and protecting your partners as well). Affinity Urgent Care strives to make STI testing comfortable, nonjudgmental, and convenient for all patients. We’re here to share some tips on how to prepare for your first STI test.

Common STI Tests

STIs are prevalent among sexually active people, and it’s important to be informed in addition to regular testing. Medical providers offer routine testing for the most common STIs, some of which include the following:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • HIV
  • Herpes

Diagnosing and treating these conditions early can prevent long-term health complications, which is why STI testing is so vital. If you have any questions about the symptoms or effects of these STIs, don’t be afraid to ask your provider during your appointment. They’re trained to handle each patient’s case with care, compassion, and sensitivity.

Scheduling Your Appointment

When scheduling your appointment, tell the office that you need STI testing so they can allocate enough time to evaluate you and perform the necessary tests. Make sure you give them important information regarding your symptoms and exposure (or possible exposure) to specific STIs. In addition, if you menstruate, try to schedule your appointment on a day you’re not menstruating (unless you have urgent symptoms or need to be evaluated after being exposed to an STI).

What To Expect at Your First STI Test

At your visit, our compassionate medical team will discuss your sexual history, including your types of sexual activity and number of partners. We will note any symptoms you are experiencing, such as unusual discharge, sores, itching, or pain. We’ll also ask about your general health and other concerns. To ease your mind, remember that everything we talk about during this visit is entirely confidential.

After taking your medical history, we will perform STI testing that addresses your symptoms, which may include blood tests, urine samples, or swabs. These tests are fast and usually painless, and most STI tests at Affinity Urgent Care provide results within a day. In some cases, we may need to perform a physical examination; your provider will ensure you are comfortable and reassured every step of the way. We will discuss the next steps with you if anything comes back positive.

What To Do During Your Appointment

During your visit, it’s essential to be honest and provide accurate information to the medical professional you speak with. This allows them to test for the proper STIs and give you the most effective treatment plan. You should also avoid urinating an hour before a urine test to ensure accurate results.

Ask your provider questions, whether you’re concerned about the testing process, treatment options, or anything following your appointment—there’s no need to be hesitant; they’ve heard it all and are there to support you!

"We have a special needs daughter who needed her foot looked at. Thankful that Affinity accepted her Medicaid first of all. Staff was nice, did not have a long wait, doctor was knowledgeable and understanding with our daughter, which means a lot. She was able to get x-rays done on her foot and received the results before we left. A great place to go on short notice."
